The leading Sufi writer was Rumi. You can find books by Sufi Muslims at book stores. I am sure you have herd of the Whirling Dervish ? They are Sufi Muslims. They take these
things not literally but metaphysically.
The verses in the quran are not literal, they are like the bible, symbolic.
"Surely the worst of beasts in God's sight are the unbelievers." (The Accessions: 8: 55)
Following the same pattern as western metaphysical symbols the beast is the flesh or the physical as opposed to the spiritual. Here you can see the physical animal who cannot believe and the physical human who can and refuses. Thus the admonition that the physical that has the capacity to understand and refuses is much lower then the the physical that does not have the capacity to understand.
"Evil is that for which they have sold their souls that they should deny what Allah has revealed, out of envy that Allah should send down of His grace on whomsoever of His servants He pleases; so they have made themselves deserving of wrath upon wrath, and there is a disgraceful punishment for the unbelievers."
Actually this is quite consistent with the Bible. It is speaking not of punishment from God but the natural effects that come down upon one that is focused on the lower and not the higher. We see what earth has brought upon itself at the present time with both sides looking literally at one another instead of spiritually or viewing the light. The punishment is not from God but simply a natural result of being in conflict with nature.
"Surely those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers, these it is on whom is the curse of Allah and the angels and men all". (The Cow: 2: 161 )
This follows the Jesus teaching that when an evil spirit goes out from a person it returns and the conditions become far worse then originally. Here it describes that light as being cursed and notice that that it infects angels which are angles of light and living physical people. This is why executing criminals is so bad.
"Fight those who do not believe in Allah, nor in the latter day, nor do they prohibit what Allah and His Apostle have prohibited, nor follow the religion of truth, out of those who have been given the Book, until they pay the tax in acknowledgment of superiority and they are in a state of subjection" (Immunity 9: 29 )
It does not mean shoot people or blow people up. It means fight against the non spiritual or God precepts. Fight against the Falwells and Bin Ladens of the world who do not follow the natural course of light which brings peace and restoration.
To humiliate simply means that someone outside of the faith must be shown their own error and eventually brought to see that in spite of their commitment to their belief they are desperately wrong.
"O you who believe! do not take your fathers and your brothers for guardians if they love unbelief more than belief; and whoever of you takes them for a guardian, these it is that are the unjust" (Immunity : 9: 23)
It reminds me of Jesus saying, I have come to pit brother against father and daughter against mother. It also reminds me of the scripture that says that a persons worst enemies will be his own family. This simply warns us about being pulled into the beliefs of family because of a need to keep peace within that family. We must break away to flow with the light even if that means against our family.
"O ye who believe! Murder those of the disbelievers and let them find harshness in you." (Immunity 9: 123)
Murder means to break down the life aspects of a person to where those principals by which they exist actually die. It is what I have been talking about with executing criminals. We have to work, not on killing the body but on killing the negative light within them.
Here the admonition is to murder but remember this is metaphysical and never speaks of the physical body. It is speaking of the life force. That is the light.
Here that life force is negative and must be killed so a new life force can be put in place. Kill the negative light or blow it out so it can be filled with a new positive light.
"Let not the believers take the unbelievers for friends whoso does that belongs not to God." (The Family of Imram: 3: 60)
Simply put, one who has a positive inner light which flows in harmony with the supreme light can not condone interaction with a negative light. This does not mean you can not go over someones house for dinner, or you cannot go to a ball game. It means in matters of cosmic harmony you can not entertain the religious beliefs of someone who is stuck on the literal or physical because it can damage your own light.
As the Bible says what do believers have in comming with unbelievers.
Thou shalt NOT read ancient holy writ LITERALLY!

The infidel is always the EGO in the Quran, the EGO is God's adversary in every holy book in the world, you are to fight the thoughts, the actions, the negative emotional outbursts etc..,.that come from this infidel (the lower ego mind).
Holy Qu'ran, Sura viii, 39-42
Let those who fight in the cause of God who barter the life of this world for that which is to come; for whoever fights on God's path, whether he is killed or triumphs, We will give him a handsome reward.
The life of this world is the same teaching as the bible, this world belongs to EGO'S, that which is to come is the higher consciousness ALLAH, to do battle with this ego, you are rewarded for your effort. weather or not you can overcome this infidel or not.
Holy Qu'ran, Sura iv, 74
Your wives are a tilth for you, so go into your tilth when you like, and do good beforehand for yourselves.
(The physical condition of a soil) .. in relation to its fitness for the growth of a crop). When in good tilth, a soil is mellow, friable and easily worked.
tilth means to labor, to condition the soil, in this verse, the soil is the mind, and body, the wife is the emotions, that's why it says the wives are tilth for you, because to cultivate the soil (the consciousness) wife and turn from the lower emotional state to a higher one, requires tilthing, which is a code word for MEDITATION.
Holy Qu'ran, Sura ii, 223
When you meet the unbelievers, strike off their heads; then when you have made wide slaughter among them, carefully tie up the remaining captives. Holy Qu'ran, Sura xlvii.4
Unbelievers are a symbol of the lower mind and the thoughts that arise out of lower egoic thinking, when you can't get the EGO to come on board with your desire to think and speak with goodness and richness, then every thought that arises from this beast (infidel), must be cut off, they must be slaughtered, to tie up the remaining captives is symbolism regarding the rest of the negative lower mind thoughts, that arise out of the mind, tie these up.
As soon as the Muslims get on board with what their Quran really teaches the sooner we can end the murder, strife and suffering of all peoples in the world, their book is written in deep symbols just like the bible.
JIHAD EXPLAINED
In the linguistic sense, the Arabic word "jihad" means struggling or striving and applies to any effort exerted by anyone.
In this sense, a student struggles and strives to get an education and pass course work; an employee strives to fulfill his/her job and maintain good relations with his/her employer; a politician strives to maintain or increase his(1) popularity with his constituents and so on.
The term strive or struggle may be used for/by Muslims as well as non-Muslims; for example, Allah, the One and Only True God says in the Qur'an:

In the West, "jihad" is generally translated as "holy war," a usage the media has popularized. According to Islamic teachings, it is unholy to instigate or start war; the war and struggle are within one's own nature Jihad means to have an all out Holy War against one's own lower animal mind, but the fanatics don't get that part, they read the Quran literally, just as the Fundies read their bibles literally, corrupting the mystical meaning.
If we translate the words "holy war" back into Arabic, we find "harbun muqaddasatu," or for "the holy war," "al-harbu al-muqaddasatu." We challenge any researcher or scholar to find the meaning of "jihad" as holy war in the Qur'an or authentic Hadith collections or in early Islamic literature. Unfortunately, some Muslim writers and translators of the Qur'an,
the Hadith and other Islamic literature translate the term "jihad" as "holy war," due to the influence of centuries-old Western
propaganda.
This could be a reflection of the Christian use of the term "Holy War" to refer to the Crusades of a thousand years ago.
However, the Arabic words for "war" are "harb" or "qital," which are found in the Qur'an and Hadith.
For Muslims the term Jihad is applied to all forms of striving and has developed some special meanings over time.
The problem is the same as with the Bible, these Muslim fundamentalists read and interpret the Quran Literally, instead of symbolically.
Allah declares in the Qur'an:
"To those against whom war is made, permission is given (to defend themselves), because they are wronged - and verily, Allah is Most Powerful to give them victory - (they are) those who have been expelled from their homes in defiance of right - (for no cause) except that they say, 'Our Lord is Allah'."
It should read; "To those against whom war is made, permission is given (to declare war on your lower mind), because they are wronged - and verily, Allah is Most Powerful to give them victory -to those who have been expelled from their homes (the higher mind) in defiance of right - except that they say, 'Our Lord is Allah'."

Jihad is an Arabic word that means the endeavour to do your best to make this world a better one:
Any effort to help achieve that is called jihad, or struggle, going to school to learn is a form of jihad, being a mother rearing children is jihad, spreading knowledge through teaching or writing is jihad, treating patients is jihad, looking after sick parents is jihad, also defending yourself when attacked is jihad, and struggling against oppression is jihad.
Any action that one undertakes in order to bring good mankind is jihad
Life with all its ups and downs is a jihad
The highest form of Jihad, however, is the inner Jihad, which is the Major Jihad that means the never ending inner struggle against one’s arrogance, greed, and selfishness in order to achieve the Generous Temperaments, in short one's own EGO, it is the EGO that we are render the all out JIHAD against..
Prophet Muhammad, Peace be upon him, declared "Verily I was sent to this World to define (and live by) the Generous Temperament." According to him, the codes of Generous Temperament (makarem elakhlaq)
are seven:
“Pardoning those who have oppressed you Giving to those who have deprived you Connecting with those who have shunned you Benefiting those who have abused you Counseling those who have deceived you Forgiving those who have maligned you Forbearing with those who have angered you.”
How misleading and dishonest is the translation and misconception of jihad as a holy war then!
It's all symbolic.
The problem with reading the Quran LITERALLY, is the same problem as reading the Bible literally.
For example, the Quranic verse or ayah 4:24 is held up as justification for mutah:
"Also [forbidden to you are] married women, except those whom you own as slaves. Such is the decree of God. All women other than these are lawful for you, provided you court them with your wealth in modest conduct, not in fornication. Give them their dowry for the enjoyment you have had of them as a duty; but it shall be no offense for you to make any other agreement among yourselves after you have fulfilled your duty. Surely God is all-knowing and wise."
Believers in a literal and eternal interpretation of the Quran/Koran seem to have only one place to go with this verse, which basically says that Muslim men can own sex slaves.
Moreover, according to Islamic or sharia law, a woman has no right to divorce, as only a man does, a right he may freely exercise in some Muslim areas merely by saying the word talaq—"I divorce you"—three times. A man can then proceed to marry another woman and another after that by doing the same thing.
The notorious Quranic ayah 4:34 makes men superior to women and allows them to beat them:
"Men have authority over women because God has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because God has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and forsake them in beds apart, and beat them."

As concerns the guarding of "unseen parts," in some Muslim sects, a woman's entire body is considered awrah or "naked" and thus must be completely cloaked. In other words, a woman is wholly a sex organ. In other sects, a woman's hands and face may be exposed, but the rest of her is a "walking vagina" and must be covered up in loose-fitting clothes so that no man but her husband-owner may see her shape.
Additionally, there are many hadiths or commentaries on the Quran and Muhammad that disparage women and essentially allow for their subjugation and enslavement. In the Tabari (9:113) or History of the Prophets and Kings, written in the 10th century by a respected Islamic scholar and theologian, we read the following about women:
"Allah permits you to shut them in separate rooms and to beat them, but not severely. If they abstain, they have the right to food and clothing. Treat women well for they are like domestic animals and they possess nothing themselves. Allah has made the enjoyment of their bodies lawful in his Qur'an."
Islamic misogyny is so rampant that it extends to the Muslim hell, the main occupants of which are women, allegedly seen by Muhammad himself:
"I stood at the gates of Paradise, most of those who entered there were poor, I stood at the gates of Hell, most of those who went in there, were women."
Forced prostitution is illegal in civilized countries
While it may be argued that even the United States has legal, government-approved brothels, as in the state of Nevada, the fact is that forced prostitution is against American law and is generally vigorously prosecuted wherever it is found.
The victims of forced prostitution in Western countries are not imprisoned and raped as they are in Iran and elsewhere, as part of the "religious" punishment according to Islamic or sharia law. Nor is the sexploitation of women in the West justified by "sacred scriptures" or "religious traditions" of any sort, although sexism and misogyny themselves are also common to the other Abrahamic faiths of Judaism and Christianity, as well as other religions.
In the end, the fact will remain that according to mainstream, classical Islam, women are subordinate to men and can be exploited at will. As the Quran (2:223) also says:
"Women are your fields: go then, into your fields whence you please."
Concerning the Iranian Islamic fundamentalists, Hughes states, "Misogyny is at the heart of their ideology and is the framework of their state structure and authority." Until the world grapples with the fact of religiously justified sexism and misogyny, it cannot call itself enlightened and civilized.
In conclusion, the videos appended to this article give a sad view of what has happened to so many women in Iran since Islamic fundamentalists took over—as well as what happens to any nation that oppresses women and does not allow them the opportunity to pursue their own natural and God-given gifts and talents.
As Dr. Hughes also says, "Only the overthrow of the mullahs and the defeat of their theocracy will liberate women from a system of contempt and hatred for women." The lovely women—and men—of Iran deserve a much better life than they have been consigned to these many years, including the right to self-rule in a free, democratic state.
